John Sewall
Marine Surveyor based in Southern Maine
John Sewall graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1987 with a degree in Marine Engineering. Upon graduation, spent the next four years in the Navy as an engineering officer. He then worked for a large oil company for 32 years rising to Americas OEM Technical Manager, leading teams in marine, industrial and automotive lubricants product development across continents. During that time, he regularly performed industrial equipment inspections which honed his problem solving skills. As a result, John wrote numerous technical reports and oil analyses. He regularly delivered training sessions on oil analysis, machine failure analysis and forensic diagnostics. John attributes his successes to his ability to relate to his customers and listen to their needs. He’s too humble to call himself an expert, but his years of experience speak volumes.
Given his affinity towards all things marine and his extensive engineering experience, marine surveying was perfect fit for retirement. John was accepted into NAMSGlobal, a most highly regarded marine surveyor association, known for it’s stringent application process, member expertise and ethical standards. After a mandatory apprentice process, John is now an associate member of NAMSGlobal focused on yachts and small craft.
John is also an STLE certified lubrication engineer. His years of experience can help to provide insights into oil samples pulled as part of a marine survey if requested. Oil analyses can give rise to issues otherwise unseen within an engine. They could indicate watch areas or something more serious. John will explain what he’s seeing and suggest potential areas to investigate.
John and his family live in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and have enjoyed boating in the beautiful waters of Casco Bay for 28 years.
